General

Policy:

The Sidney Silverman Library is primarily intended for the use of Bergen Community College (BCC) students, faculty and staff; however, all are welcome to visit and use the resources available within the Library. Borrowing privileges are extended to Bergen County residents who have a library card issued by a member library of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System (BCCLS) and who are residents of that town.

Eligibility

Policy:

Borrowing privileges are extended to Bergen County residents, 18 years of age or older, who possess a BCCLS library card from their town of residence and who are in good standing.

Identification

Policy:

The borrower must present both a valid barcoded library card from their home library, and a second form of photo ID with current residence information when borrowing materials.

Registration

Policy:

Using the barcode on the home library card, reciprocal borrowers will be registered for one year or to the expiration date of their BCCLS library card, whichever occurs sooner. This registration may be renewed only if the borrower’s record remains free of outstanding obligations.

Item Limits

Policy:

Reciprocal borrowers may have a total of four (4) BCC items at any given time. All material that normally circulates may be borrowed.

Loan Period

Policy:

Loan periods for materials are as follows: 21 days for books, 7 days for media. One renewal is permitted on books only, provided there are no recalls or holds. Renewals are not permitted on media.

Responsibility for Lost Materials

Policy:

The individual borrower assumes responsibility for lost and damaged materials charged out on their card. Lost or damaged items will be billed at the Silverman library’s purchase price plus a $15.00 processing fee.

**Patrons are not permitted to replace copies on their own. Library acquisitions are used to ensure the correct copy is ordered.**

Suspension of Borrowing Privileges

Policy:

Borrowing privileges are suspended when materials are overdue. When an item becomes overdue the Silverman Library staff will contact the home library to place a block on the patron record in the BCCLS system to ensure prompt return of their materials. The Sidney Silverman Library will issue Six Month Bills to home libraries of patrons with outstanding materials.

Service Restrictions

Policy:

Recalls, Holds and Interlibrary Loan requests will not be placed for reciprocal borrowers. Borrowing privileges are limited to the Sidney Silverman Library only, and are not recognized by agreements with other institutions.

Return of Materials

Policy:

Borrowers may return books to BCC or any BCCLS library.

Study Space and Computer Use

Policy:

Due to space constraints during peak hours, the Silverman Library recommends evening and weekend visits. At all times, priority for library computer use will be extended to BCC students engaged in course related work.
