    a. BCCLS Statement on Current Social Crisis – VOTE
In response to the current social crisis, BCCLS drafted a statement which was reviewed by the attorney. The board will determine whether or not to make a statement and if this is the statement to be used. BCCLS does not typically issue statements, but it issued one recently regarding the decision to boycott Macmillan Publishers and one some time ago when Northvale reorganized as a municipal library. A discussion followed. Several board members felt the statement needed to be more specific as it does not address the issues about racism and what the current protests are about. If BCCLS decides not to issue a statement, it can consider creating a newsletter showing highlights of all the great things (Readers’ Advisory, programming, resource lists, dialogue) libraries have done to support this mission. Another director felt that the mission, website, policies, collections, displays, actions, and programs speak for his library. There was a comment that the Executive Board should not speak for all libraries; this decision should be made by System Council. There was also a question of who this statement is for: our member libraries? our patrons? our vendors? Silence is complicit in acts of racism and it is important to say something. The message can be that the BCCLS Executive Board supports the role of protest, supports the role of social justice and encourages our member libraries to review their policies to look for places to fight oppression. It is important to narrow the scope of the statement to ensure it does not overlap with local library board decisions. BCCLS is not providing a statement for libraries to use. The statement issued by LLNJ is different because they are an advocacy group while BCCLS is a member of it. Several board members liked the ideas of a special newsletter and sharing the resources that are available. Stephanie Bellucci tabled further discussion for now and suggested that the membership provide their comments which will be used to draft a revised statement and share their contributions for a special newsletter.

It was MOVED BY: Ellen O’Keefe Seconded by: Matt Latham
To issue a statement on behalf of the Executive Board after it has been reviewed. All in favor. Motion carried.
  6. Membership Hearing
Stephanie Bellucci reminded everyone that it is important for directors to provide their input about the statement. Since the issue is time sensitive, the statement will be decided at the next Executive Board meeting. Approval by System Council is not necessary, but the membership can easily participate virtually in the discussion at the Executive Board meeting. Directors should look for an email asking for their input on the statement.
  7. Date of Next Meeting
Another special Executive Board will be held on June 11 at 9:30 am to BCCLS statement on the current social crisis.

The upcoming regularly scheduled meetings are:
