Present: Larry Bergmann (Trustee, Livingston) Patricia Durso (Executive Administrator, Allendale & committee co-chairman), Jenifer May (Director, Secaucus), Tom Madru (Trustee, Park Ridge & committee co-chairman), John Mongelli (Trustee, Ho-Ho-Kus), Darlene Swistock (BCCLS Liaison), Peter Wendrochowicz (Trustee, Mahwah).and Mike Violano (Trustee, Westwood).

Absent:  Mike Banick (Director, Millburn), Kathy Cannarozzi (Director, Rochelle Park),

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 10:02 AM by Mr. Madru.

Approval of Minutes:

Motion to approve the amended minutes of the August 7, 2020 committee meeting was made by Mr. Wendrychowicz. Second the motion: Ms. Durso. The minutes were approved by all except Mr. Mongelli, who abstained since he was not at the meeting. 

Old Business:

Preparation for October 1, 2020 Seminar “Trustee 101: A high level overview of important topics for new and newer Trustees. (This title was suggested by Ms. Swistock and we were all asked to determine if we like it or would like to change it).

We have six presentations for the program and after some discussion, the final sequence and presenters were decided. The program will be:

  • Ms. Durso – Welcome
  • Mr.  Wendrychowicz – The Role of the Trustee
  • Mr. Hanson – The importance of being a BCCLS member
  • Mr. Madru – Library Funding Beyond the 1/3 of a mil  
  • Mr. Bergmann – How to run a Board meeting, the importance of continuing education and the importance of having a library attorney
  • Mr. Violano – Basic Strategic Planning
  • Ms. Hui – Community outreach and relationships with stakeholders
  • Ms. Durso – Moderate Q&A, as time permits
  • Ms. Durso – Wrap up (details on CE certificates, evaluations, etc.)

The program may be delivered with PowerPoint slides with content from the presenters as needed. The top of the presentation will have an agenda with the expected time for each topic.  These presentations should be forwarded to Ms. Swistock by September 21st.

Ms. Swistock and Ms. Durso will create a flier and an Eventbrite invitation. The invitation will be to the point and will contain a save the date message for Trustee 201 on October 15th.

Action Items

1-Ms. Swistock will speak to Eric Lozauskas concerning technical, capabilities, needs and coverage for the program

2-Presenters will provide any handouts or Powerpoints to Ms. Durso by September 21st.

3-Ms. Swistock and Ms. Durso will work on a flier and an Eventbrite invitation.

4-Each committee member has been asked to review the suggested program name to see if it is what we want to use.

5-Mr. Madru and Ms. Durso will contact Mimi Hui to see if she will be a presenter.

6- Mr. Madru and Ms. Durso will provide Ms. Swistock with desired focus points to be shared with Mr. Hanson.

New Business:

We will discuss Trustee 201 at our next meeting.

Mr. Mongelli and Ms,. Swistock suggested that this on-going series be expanded to include a Trustee 301, 401 and 501 component.


Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Mr. Wendrychowiczi at 11:56pm. Second the motion: Mr. Bergmann.
