BCCLS Friends Committee Minutes 6.9.2017

The meeting took place at Englewood Public Library and came to order at 10:10 AM.

Present: Daragh O’Connor, River Edge; Robin Rockman, Oradell; Ella Urdang, Englewood; Darlene Swistock, BCCLS, Georgene Betterbed, Glen Rock; Melissa Singlevich, Hasbrouck Heights; Jeanne Sylvester, Nutley; Lynn Kloss, Teaneck; Ellen O’Keefe, Glen Rock; Emiliana Tuohey, Fair Lawn.

Absent: Donna Perkosky, Paramus; Camille Valentino

Approval of minutes of April 21st meeting. Motion: Ella Urdang. 2nd Robin Rockman. All were in favor.

Old Business

Fundraising ideas handouts were distributed.

Discussion of Performer’s Showcase event held at Maywood Public Library. We may try to do this in 2 year’s time, but would recommend collaborating with Adult Services Committee. The venue was suitable and we are grateful to Maywood Public Library for hosting. The locked bathrooms were a problem at times. Attendance was lower than expected. The performers were wonderful, but some stayed on too long. Feedback from attendees was highly positive.

There was a discussion on how to contact friends groups and generally how to publicize library events. Evanced, Burbio, The Bergen Record (for major events) were mentioned.

New Business

The Friends’ Breakfast, not the Scholarship Breakfast, was discussed. There was no success on getting author Harlan Coben as a speaker. Daragh suggested an author from BooksNJ might be suitable and that a recommendation from Arlene might be obtained. Georgene suggested two authors from Glen Rock who also work for The New Yorker magazine. Daragh insisted that we need someone who is both prominent and a fan of public libraries.

The Friends Breakfast will take place on Tuesday, October 17th at Seasons in Washington Township.

Robin will ask John Trause to recommend a recent scholarship winner who can speak.

Table flowers were discussed.

Libraries and friends groups will be asked to bring baskets for the silent auction. Each Committee members will call 6 libraries, so that we get many quality baskets.

Next meeting date: Friday, June 30th at 9:30 AM at River Edge Public Library.

Food truck fundraising idea was raised by Darlene and discussed. Could it be a fundraiser for the Scholarship Committee?

Daragh was asked to check with Laurie to see if our Library Champions emails lists are still in operation. They may be useful when we need to advocate for upcoming library construction legislation.

Adjournment: the meeting was adjourned at 11:55 AM. Motion: Robin Rockman; Second: Emiliana. All were in favor.
